Do social media managers need to be chronically online in order to be exceptional at their jobs?

Short answer:

To be great, maybe not.

But to be exceptional, yes.

Long answer:

The social media landscape moves so quickly, especially in industries like tech and crypto.

So much can happen in just 30 minutes.

Being chronically online allows you to identify trends, be “in the know” with timely events, and have a good sense of what/when/how to post based on cultural nuances within your niche.

I don’t necessarily think you need to be logged into the brand account 24/7, but you probably need to be checking social platforms (could be your personal) multiple times a day, spread out throughout the entire day.

I personally love social media.

But I know the role can be exhausting.

Especially when you consider all of the other roles that social media managers play: customer service rep, creator, community manager, analytics wiz, etc.

It’s one of the main reason why burnout is so common in the industry.

I think it’s healthy to set times and even days where you unplug completely.

This allows you to have a constant flow of motivation and energy to keep going as a creator, social media manager, community manager, etc.

I shared this question with my Twitter audience and here’s what some people said.

BTW - Many of these people work in social media, work with social media managers, or are creators themselves.

I agree with a lot of the sentiment shared below.

Hope you enjoyed this short piece.
