I recently shared this tweet and got about a dozen replies & DMs asking for more info…so here we are!

“An hour of outbound community management a day keeps the growth plateau away”

But what’s community management?

I did a deep dive in another post, but here’s the TLDR:

The full post can be found here:

So then what’s Outbound Community Management?

It all boils down to getting your brand discovered in net new posts (usually not from your content, but from other accounts who are posting within your niche)

Here’s an example, REI commenting on a camping post.

Notice the replies — people love it.

Here’s another example from YouTube:

Again, look at the response to their comment:

This is one of the best ways to build superfans.

But you’re probably thinking…”great for them but how do I do this (or teach my team to do it?)”

Got you.

Here’s my Outbound Community Management Strategy

  1. Find 10-20 accounts in your niche

  2. Follow all of them

  3. Turn on notifications for the top 5-10 who have engaged audiences

  4. When they post, drop a comment in the replies

  5. Keep comments fun, helpful, or engaging (don’t just spam)

  6. As posts gains traction, engage with others who replied as well

  7. Look through their content and find other people who engage

  8. Do this hundreds (or thousands) of times per week

  9. A portion of those people (and others) will visit your account

  10. If your profile is optimized and your content is good, people will follow

Why does this work?

You’re increasing the surface area of your brand’s profile, allowing it to be discovered by people who are likely to engage with your content.

People who like your content are most li

Plus, if you can make people laugh or add value to the conversation via replies, then you increase the likelihood of having more traffic to your account.

Works just like a funnel.

If you’re a on a lean social media team or you’re trying to implement this for your personal brand, I’d recommend carving out a set time to do this every day.

Morning or afternoon probably work best since that’s when people are doomscrolling as they avoid working.

Also, if you turn on notifications for accounts in your niche, you can set them muted on your phone — this way you can just go into each social platform and bulk review all new posts within your notifications tab.

Otherwise you’d drive yourself crazy trying to reply to everything in real time.

Last thing I want to reiterate here,

All of this only leads to growth if your content is good.

Commenting on posts will get you discovered, but if your content is crap then it won’t convert people.

Put yourself in the shoes of people lurking.

You see a funny or helpful comment in the replies of one of your favorite creators.

You go to the profile of the person (or brand) who commented.

And all you see are reposts or spammy content.

You’re not going to follow right?

Increase your odds of converting people to loyal followers by sharing great content on a consistent basis.

Here are a few posts that should help you setup your content game:
