How to Build a Founder Account From Scratch

A short guide to help you get started today.

This post feels almost too silly to post, but given the amount of advice founders ask me for, I thought I’d outline my thoughts.

Here’s how to build a founder account from scratch:

General advice

  • Pick 1 platform (ideally where your users are spending most of their time)

  • Aim to post daily or at least 5 days a week (for at least 6 months)

  • Don’t just post & ghost, engage with w/ peers, users, & community members

  • Don’t post dogshit - keep your quality bar high, especially at the start

  • Have your team and brand account amplify some of your best posts

  • Keep a healthy mix of original posts (75% posts from you & 25% RTs/QTs)

  • No need for super fancy production or editing. People will follow you because of your unique takes, knowledge, & story

  • Keep content helpful, insightful, inspirational, or funny (if that’s your vibe)

  • Use a scheduling tool (like Typefully or Bluecast) if it helps you with consistency, but you eventually want to get to the point where you are firing off posts on your own as ideas come to you

Here’s a rough content strategy you can begin implementing today:

Start by breaking out your content into 3 main buckets.

  1. Who are you?

  2. What are you working on?

  3. What are you good at?

Let’s dive into each one:

Who are you?

  • What’s your story?

  • How’d you get here?

  • What are your hobbies?

  • Any obsessions you have?

  • What’s your personality like?

  • What are your online interests?

  • Who are some of your favorite creators?

  • What’s an average day look like for you?

What are you working on?

  • What’s your company?

  • What are you building?

  • Why is it important?

  • What’s it like working with your team?

  • Are there opportunities to celebrate your team in public?

  • Any upcoming product or company announcements?

  • Any milestones you recently hit or are coming up on?

  • What are customers saying about your product?

  • What has your company’s journey been like?

What are you good at?

  • What are you better at than most people?

  • How did you end up getting good at this?

  • Why did you find yourself gravitating to this?

  • Can you explain what you know to a novice?

  • Do you have any hot takes on current trends?

  • What are you observing in your niche that others don’t see?

  • What are the top questions you get about what you do?

  • Any misconceptions about what you do?

Ok, so now that you have your content buckets and prompts, time to create.

Right now while you’re reading this newsletter, pick just one of the questions above, open up X or LinkedIn, and write out your response.

Then actually hit “post” (don’t get caught up in trying to be perfect).

Get started, get going, then get good over time.

Next, all you have to do is open up Typefully or Bluecast and schedule a few more posts for the rest of the week.

Then log into your account each day to engage with your community.
